ADAM: Wheresoever she was, THERE was Eden.1

The scene

Eve’s Diary is Eve’s comic and tender account of the garden, of naming things, of the strange creature Adam and of coming to love him ‘merely because he is MINE and is MASCULINE’. Its last entry, ‘Forty Years Later’, is her prayer that if one of them must die first, it be she, because life without him ‘would not be life’. The story ends at her grave, with Adam’s single line. Twain wrote it in 1904-05, in the year after the death of his wife Olivia in June 1904; his biographer Albert Bigelow Paine, who knew him then, called Adam’s comment ‘his own comment’ and the whole diary an expression of his love for ‘the one he had laid away’.

What it means

Paradise was not a place but a person: wherever she was, he was in Eden, and with her gone it is lost.
