The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

About this quote
Where it comes from
Not in Thus Spoke Zarathustra (the one Nietzsche text in the source texts): searched (npm run find) for “tribe”, “overwhelmed” and “owning yourself” in Common’s English, with no hit. Quote Investigator (2 March 2026) traces it to Arthur Gordon’s article “Interview With an Immortal”, Reader’s Digest, July 1959, p. 41, where Gordon gives it as Kipling’s words in June 1935, so it is only as sure as Gordon’s report; Kipling died in 1936 and no independent record of the interview was found. Quote Investigator found no support for Nietzsche and dates the credit to a 1996 Usenet message. Trail below is Quote Investigator’s, not seen in the originals.
